Our Leadership

Resurrection Church is a democratic body with no paid staff.  Every preacher and officer is elected, and decisions and financials are fully transparent.

Preaching - preachers@reschurch.org

Dr. Chris Lundberg

Chris Lundberg is the lead preaching elder for Resurrection Church. He is a husband, father of three, and a proud resident of Hillsborough. Theologically, his passion is for a misfit gospel, proclaimed by an outcast, declaring the kingdom of God. He loves other stuff too: debate, college sports, and cooking with his kids. He has been married to the perfect woman for him for more than ten years. They still argue occasionally, but she always wins. He received his Master of Divinity from Emory University’s Candler School of Theology. During divinity school he discovered a passion for thinking about the power of the spoken word, so he decided to pursue a PhD in rhetoric at Northwestern University. He is currently the Jeff and Jennifer Allred Professor of Public Speaking and Debate at the Department of Communication at UNC-Chapel Hill. He writes and teaches about public speaking, rhetoric and the future of democracy. In his spare time, he helps coach the Harvard Debate Team and does communication consulting for clients in Business and Politics.

Dr. Trey Benfield

Trey is a North Carolina native, but grew up on the mean streets of Mauldin, South Carolina. He studied Biology and Business at Winthrop University before earning his Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Today he practices optometry in Burlington, Roxboro, and Yanceyville. Trey has a deep and abiding interest in the Old Testament and loves studying Hebrew. He is passionate about uncovering the ancient Near East background of the Bible and making the Old Testament accessible and relevant. His areas of interest include narrative theology, poetics, and hermeneutics. Trey and his wife Tamzen have two little boys. When not seeing patients or working on sermons, Trey enjoys reading history and literature, hunting and fishing, cheering on his beloved NC State Wolfpack, drinking beer, and generally making a nuisance of himself.

Angela Bonner

Angela is originally from Lawrenceville, Georgia but has called North Carolina home for more than 25 years. Her husband, Doug, of over 30 years and she have 3 adult or almost adult kids; Maddie, May and Mitchell. After earning her BA at Berry College, she earned her master’s degree in education from The College of Saint Joseph in Rutland, Vermont. She has taught in public, private and homeschool enrichment settings for three decades. Her passion is making learning fun by using her training in child development and the Gesell Observation to help families understand the developmental stages every child goes through while also recognizing how each child is uniquely and wonderfully made. In her free time, she loves travel, trying new restaurants, reading, rooting for the Green Bay Packers and treasure hunting in thrift stores.

Music - music@reschurch.org

Lucia Matthews

Lucia Matthews is a church elder and music officer. Lucia grew up in Connecticut, but fell in love with North Carolina when she was an undergrad at Wake Forest University; she hasn't left since. Her degree was in Sociology, but some of her favorite courses were in the music department, particularly one called “Music in the Church.” She grew up in a Lutheran church, and although at one time she couldn't bear the thought of church music that didn't involve an organ, she has since broadened her scope. Lucia and her husband, Mason, have been married for many years and have three wonderful boys. When sheʼs not busy chasing or driving around the boys, she enjoys baking, knitting, and (of course) playing the piano.

Sonya Sutton

Sonya Sutton is a church elder and the outreach officer. Sonya is a native North Carolinian and grew up in Yadkinville, but has loved living in Hillsborough since 2001. She earned a BS in public health and a master’s degree in medical journalism from UNC-Chapel Hill. She met her husband Brian through the Marching Tar Heels, and they remain huge fans of the Tar Heels (and band geeks at heart). She works in health research communications, and loves to work in engaging patients and communities about health issues that impact them most. She grew up in the Southern Baptist Church, which inspired her love of church potlucks and praise songs, but she is happy to be able to grow and learn with friends from different theological backgrounds through Resurrection Church. Sonya and Brian have two amazing daughters and two goofy dogs.
